the problem

With countless options and ever-changing trends, it can seem daunting to alter one’s style. Asking the average person to perform prompt engineering for image generation models adds another layer of complexity, making the process even more intimidating. This often leads to frustration and a lack of confidence in their clothing choices, preventing them from expressing their true selves. There is a need for an accessible solution that simplifies outfit selection and the use of generative AI tools, making dressing well simple.

the solution

Fabricate is designed to overcome these challenges by offering an intuitive interface that simplifies the process of creating custom outfits while preserving the richness of fashion choices. Research involving n = 38 user interviews, primarily college-aged individuals along with some adults and high schoolers regarding their interest in fashion, how they choose outfits etc. is a critical component of development. Beyond user research, Fabricate requires deep domain knowledge of garment construction and fashion to translate and create bounds for the image generation model to work within . Clothing is incredibly varied, and distilling these options into a simple, digestible format without losing the personal and emotional connection to fashion is a significant challenge. By understanding the intricacies of fabrics, garment construction, and fashion trends, this project is able to balance simplicity with a wide range of customizable options.

the result

This project helps apply theoretical knowledge and gain practical insights into designing for near-future tech. Rethinking the applications of LLMs by utilizing them as a back-end is a valuable learning experience that challenges to think creatively and design clear affordances, helping innovate in a real-world context. By combining in-depth user research with domain knowledge in garment construction and fashion, Fabricate manages to simplify the outfit creation process without diluting the personal and varied nature of clothing. This case study highlights the importance of bridging complex technical processes with personal experiences, ensuring that users can use the latest tech to express their style in a way that is effortless and customizable.
